Beyonce Knowles Superstar
Beyonce Giselle Knowles was born in Houston, Texas, on the Fourth of September 1981. Beyonce showed her talent at singing before the age of seven years old. At the age of seven, Beyonce began attending dancing school and had joined her church choir, in which she was a soloist.
By her teen years, any spare time Beyonce had was spent with her childhood friends, LaTayia Roberson, Kelly Rowland and LeToya Luckett, performing at local functions. Named “Girl’s Tyme” during this period of their career, the group even appeared on Ed McMahon’s Star Search but they did not make it into the qualifying round. During this early period, Beyonce’s father left his steady job to devote all his time and energy to managing and promoting the band. Even today her father, Matthew Knowles, manages Beyonce’s career.
After trying out a few different band names, the girls settledon the name Destiny’s Child. Their musical breakthrough came when their song “Killing Time”was included in the soundtrack for the movie “Men In Black” in 1997.. In 1998 the group achieved a number one single with “No, No, No Part 2″. The group became a trio later on that same year with the departure of LeToya and LaTayia, who decided to pursue individual careers.Destiny’s Child shrank that same year when LeToya left the group to pursue a solo career. The group went on though to achieve greater success with 2000 seeing four Hot 100 Number One singles on the Billboard charts and two albums that each reached number one.
The group’s second album continued with great success with tracks like “Say My Name,” “Jumpin’ Jumpin’” and the very successful “Bug A Boo.” The single “Say My Name” received two Grammy awards in 2001. After that album, Destiny’s Child produced another album, “Survivor”, which included hits like the title track and the single “Bootylicious”. After becoming one of the best selling female groups in musical history, Destiny’s Child broke up in 2005.
Prior to that time though, Beyonce had already clearly shown her talens and abilities as a vocalist and as a songwriter. She received a number of awards and honors, including the 2001 Songwriter of the Year award from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. Beyonce was the first African-American female to receive the award and only the second female to win it. Beyonce also spent some time working on solo projects which at first were not as successful as her projects with the trio, but she was not easily discouraged.
The release of her first solo album, “Dangerously In Love”, saw Beyonce return to her success with the album reaching the top selling album with over 300,000 copies sold in the first week alone.. The album’s initial single “Crazy In Love” reached the top of the charts immediately as well and remained there for 8 weeks. Later that year Beyonce’s album and single topped the charts at the same time putting her on the same level as such artists as The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, and Rod Stewart. She is the only female recording artist to achieve this feat.
The next year, 2004, Beyonce won five Grammy Awards for her debut album.
In correspondence with her 25th birthday, she released a second album called “B’day,” which sold more than her first solo album, with 541,000 copies sold in the first week afterrelease. B’Day’s first singl went on to also reach number one on the US R&B charts.
Beyonce’s third album, “I Am…Sasha Fierce”, introduced fans to her alter ego and also went on to post impressive sales figures.
Beyonce’s talent has shown no end in sight and her fans are looking forward to see what is yet to come.
